In the global context, the use of herbal and dietary supplements has become a common issue among women. One such herbal and dietary supplement, sildenafil, is widely recognized as a valuable remedy for treating female sexual dysfunction (FSD) and premature ejaculation. Although there are no formal clinical trials in the treatment of FSD, it is worth discussing the potential effects of sildenafil and its use for FSD. We investigated the effect of sildenafil on the sexual function of patients with FSD, using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and the International Index of Sexual Performance (ISSP). We also investigated the effect of sildenafil treatment on the sexual function of patients with FSD.
This research is a retrospective study. We included patients aged 12 years and older who were diagnosed with FSD, and used the IIEF-5, the IEF-7 and the IIEF-9. The patients were evaluated in the ICD-10 (International Index of Erectile Function-5) and the IIEF-9. We used the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) as the primary assessment instrument and the ICD-10 and IIEF-9 as the secondary assessment instruments. The IIEF-5 and ICD-10 were used to evaluate the erectile dysfunction in FSD and to identify the symptoms of FSD.
The mean age of the patients was 46.1±12.1 years. The mean IIEF-5 scores in patients with FSD were significantly lower than in the patients with FSD alone (6.1±3.9 vs. 5.6±3.0, respectively; p<0.001). The mean IIEF-7 scores were significantly lower in patients with FSD compared with the patients with FSD alone (9.2±6.4 vs. 6.0±3.3, respectively; p<0.001). The IIEF-9 scores were significantly lower in patients with FSD compared with patients with FSD alone (7.6±5.8 vs. 6.7±4.7, respectively; p<0.001). In addition, the IIEF-9 scores and the IIEF-5 scores were significantly lower in patients with FSD compared with the patients with FSD alone (2.3±1.5 vs. 2.6±1.4, respectively; p<0.001).
Sildenafil treatment, without any specific therapeutic intervention, is well tolerated in FSD patients. Although sildenafil has a relatively low incidence of side effects, the majority of these side effects are mild to moderate in nature. Sildenafil therapy should be considered for all women with FSD to improve sexual function and quality of life. The use of herbal and dietary supplements in FSD may be a viable treatment option for patients with these symptoms.
